But some people are Poohs!!
Beware, this post has a lot of pictures and video… 🙂
About 10 years ago, a friend of ours took Brian and I to our first Renaissance Faire, and we’ve been hooked on Faires and Festivals ever since! As a matter of fact, for six years, little old me played the part of Saphyra, Queen of the Fairies, with Brian attending me as my Herald Barwinkle at Fairy Fest in Guelph.
Well, this past long weekend was The Pirate Festival in Milton. Brian and I spent Sunday afternoon trying to get some friends to join us for a wonder filled day of seafaring, swashbuckling, and merry making. Finally with a look of both fear and excitement we had a taker. Great, we’re leaving at 8am. Well, at 7:30 am we get the dreaded phone call… “I’m bailing on you”… interesting turn of phrase wouldn’t you say… Bailing on a pirate festival!! (snort)
Now I know that when you talk to people who have never been to a festival, you get generally one of 3 reactions, fear, confusion or just a glazed look. BUT, once you go that first time, your in! I have never heard of anybody who has gone to a festival and said “Meh”. So this is my attempt through photos and videos of our day at The Pirate Festival, to show all the Poohs out there what you are missing. 🙂 Now on to some good clean, and dirty fun!!
Our day started out with a good coating of sun screen. These are outdoor festivals so sunscreen is a must!! We showed up at the gates in plenty of time to watch the gate show. Most festivals have a play that runs throughout the day starting with the first scene at the gate before you get onto the grounds. The rest of the scenes are played on various stages on the fair grounds.
Don’t forget to grab a program as this will tell you where and when to see the multiple different acts that are going on throughout the day.
For us, the first order of the day was to hook up with old friends!
This is Mistress Sparsgood aka Sharlene Wegg. While not on stage Mistress Sparsgood sells all kinds of wares needed for a good, or even not so good captain to outfit his ship.
She sells her wares in direct competition with Mr. Sparsgood aka Douglas Wegg.
Then there is Mad Mary aka Christine McLeod, who run about like a, well, like a mad woman to the point of having to be tethered. She managed to break free, but Brian caught up with her!
And then there is Jeff Blakeney whom we see almost on a daily basis as he lives here in Mount Forest. Jeff is the guy who got us into this in the first place. We all started out as patrons together before becoming actors at Fests and Feasts. Jeff has taken it a step farther and become Fredrick Drick one of the Drick Brothers, a comedy style juggling group along with 2 other friends Andrew Humphries aka Aldrick Drick and the brains of the operation, Dave Cossaro aka Cedrick Drick.
There were plenty more friends but either I/we neglected to take photos or we were just too caught up in the day to remember to pull out the camera. Oh well.
We took in a few of the stage shows. This is Zoltan the Adequate as seen in the picture below.
Zoltan does Poi “fire spinning”.
This was the very first time I have ever been called up to the stage as a patron. Zoltan read my mind!! Brian didn’t get all of the bit, but basically Zoltan asked me to think of something special to me, write it on a slip of paper and then rip the paper up. You will see the rest. 🙂
Here’s our friends The Drick Brothers performing one of their bits.
And for your viewing pleasure, another 🙂
Then there is the Mud Show! This is where the dirty fun comes in 🙂 An unique version of Muckbeth is played out in MUD!!! These are our friends Chris Kerba, Nick Brodie and Chris Reed, of Eclectic Revival and Queen Sully! How much more fun can it get!
In the end Nick always manages to end up in a mermaid costume 🙂
Not only were we able to catch up with old friends we met some new ones!! Meet Steve Santini. Steve is an escape artist and the star of “Deals From The Dark Side”. We met Steve and his wife Vera when we went over to their booth to look at their instruments of torture… no really… Steve collects Medieval Torture Devises. Anyway, we just got to talking and hit it right off!! They even invited us out to their home to see the 3rd floor dungeon (the collection), have a few drinks and a bbq. You can be we will be taking them up on their offer ASAP… although I’m not sure
who what will be on the menu 🙂 They are really sweet people 🙂
Have you ever been hugged by a dragon? I have and I gotta tell ya, he’s a GREAT HUGGER!!
Here are just a bunch of random pictures of us having fun!
Of course we had so spend a little time in the Captains Keg… it just wouldn’t be neighbourly if we didn’t!
Then there is the pub sing. I was having waaaayyyyy too much fun so I didn’t get any good picks or video… my bad 🙂
And of course we did come home with some Pirate Bootie 🙂
This is Brian’s new Steampunk Pocket Watch 🙂
And I got an Ear Dragon!
So that was our day at The Pirate Festival! We had way too much fun, a few drinks and lots of laughs!! But now you may be asking yourself, why did she subtitle this post “But Some People Are Poohs”? Well, it’s for you Shelley… yes, I know you are reading this!!! You, my dear girl are The Pooh in question!! Brian and I wanted you to see all the fun you were missing by “bailing” out!! Hehehe… now I’ll be waiting for a phone call 🙂 bwahahahaah!!!
